New Zealand Hover Fly

Melangyna novaezealandiae. Length 1 cm.

Non-stop rain today, but not so heavy as to cause flooding as it has in other places. I put my camera in a plastic bag and dashed around the wet garden taking a few quick shots. I liked this one the best. Our mostly black hover fly with the pale cream stripes is rather sombre compared to the bright yellow ones I saw on Blip during the northern summer.
