Stunning Stereum

As planned, I went for a walk along the valley this morning to check out paths for a walk I am leading in January. I think it was one of the most productive I've had down there for a long time in terms of wildlife spotting. There were lots of woodland birds about: treecreeper, nuthatch, bullfinch and gold crest put on fine shows and the number of different fungi still around was astonishing. There were autumn species like parrot wax cap meadow wax cap and clouded agaric, there were blewitts, and lots of jellies and brackets. There was a large area of logs with these stereum growing on them in an amazing range of colour variations. At first, I thought they were different ones, but on closer inspection, I think they might all be the same - stereum subtormentosum - some of which I think may have been colonised by algae to produce the fantastic colours. Whatever they are, I thing they are pretty spectacular.
