Catching Up!!

Catching up on my blips further...

Took this while on my way to the recently renovated and unique High Line Park in the old Meat-packing District in Manhattan during the Thanksgiving holiday.

The park was once a commercial elevated freight line running along Manhattan's 10th Avenue transporting goods into and out of Manhattan and was in service for most of the 20th century. However due to improved road transportation and highways, the line was less and less used until operation finally ceased in 1980. After that the line was abandoned and left to decay and some sections demolished. What remains of this line runs along 10th Avenue from Gansevoort street to 34th street.

Through a local advocacy group "Friends of the High Line" this abandoned line has successfully been renovated into a park that presently runs from Gansevoort Street to 31th Street. The final section of the line and accompanying rail yard to 34th street has yet to be renovated.

You can get a sense of the history of this line when it was in operation, abandoned and what it has been transformed today here.
