Ye Olde Golf Tavern. (Established 1456)
The argument will never die.
Everyone knows about St. Andrews for Golf, but that's pretty modern, dating from some point just before 1574. The Guinness Book of Records states Musselburgh Links (2nd March 1672) as the earliest golf course (but folks over a beer beg to differ).
But Edinburghers really know it's down to two contenders; Bruntsfield Links and Leith Links. In 1744 Leith lodged the first known official rules of golf (this included playing round cows and through the band stand). But that's no valid claim if you're downing a pint in the Golf Tavern.
Why are Bruntsfield Links nor Leith Links in the book of records? Both have long since stopped being used as active golf courses.
They only have 19th holes left.
(Guinness Book of Records prefers continuous playing of golf across the centuries which is why Musselburgh beats even St. Andrews).
