I think this is a Sitka spruce. I've forgotten exactly what the tree as a whole looked like, but my tree identification for boys book shows blueish needles like this for the Sitka.
Apparently it's the most common planted commercial forest tree in Britain, but thrives best in the west of the country, which is wetter than where we are here. Anyhow, during the Second World War, they made Mosquito fighter-bombers from these trees. I always remember my father pointing out the converted furniture factory where they built them.
