Between fen and mountains

Fen fields

After the mountains of the Pyrenees, the fens of Lincolnshire might seem drab and boring. It is true that at times they may lower the spirits as when an easterly wind from Siberia cuts through to the bones, when rain lashes down from a glowering sky or when a pervading mist hangs in the air and everything is damp and dull. However, there are two compensations, uninterrupted vistas and big skies. The farming is industrial in scale but the low winter sun on the recently planted fields produces a stark geometry that has its own beauty. There is no doubt it is impressive.
