Witness to a Life
After undertaking a final, I decided to walk my pup along the waterfront thinking the fog shrouded bridges would make an interesting blip. As I walked, I noticed a lone man sitting on a bench, a blanket around him, shivering, and crying. I approached, enquiring if he was okay. He did not want to talk and I respected his decision. As I began walking away, I stopped, turned around, and took his picture because I believe it is vital the people in our communities, whether homeless or not, be witnessed and their life acknowledged. As I type, I am reminded of a quote by Mother Teresa. I'm not a religious person, but I have always admired Mother Teresa for the hard work she undertook during her life.
We should realize that poverty doesn't only consist in being hungry for bread, but rather it is a tremendous hunger for human dignity. We need to love and be somebody for someone else.
I don't know who this man is, but I hope he is able to find food, shelter, and comfort in the coming day and weeks.
