Ancient and Modern

Forbury Park, Reading, my route into work. This picture aims to capture the contrast of architecture in the town, from the modern (and mostly empty) office building, The Blade, with the ruins of Reading Abbey in front of it. The proudly dominating lion commemorates men from the 66th Berkshires who lost their lives to the nineteenth century version of the war in Afghanistan. It is known as the Maiwand Lion or, locally, as the Forbury Lion.
