Ribbons of gold
In early summer, bands of brilliant yellow border the Great Western Highway - coreopsis - the sunniest, most cheerful weed on the mountains. There are lots of folk tales about how these flowers got to be on the mountains in such profusion - usually about an old lady who used to sit in the train going up and down the mountain, scattering seeds out the window. Interestingly, you only really see them along the highway.
