Today was the most emotional day of Brazilian football I've experienced since I was in Sao Paulo in 2002 when Brazil became world champions for the fifth time.

Early this morning their beloved Socrates who captained the 1982 world cup team to near victory and, some would say, showed Brazil the way to democracy, died aged 57. His former team Corinthians woke to the news on the day they would dispute the final round of the Brazilian national league and, fittingly, become champions for the fifth time.

Here you see the resignation of a Vasco supporter whose Rio-based team were in with a chance of winning the title until their local arch rivals Flamengo took great pleasure in frustrating their title ambitions; you can see their supporters waving and cheering in the background.
