Hologram
Turbine blades
This is a hologram of a set of turbine blades. Each blade root is slid into a grooved section and the blade is then in it's own space. The clearances on these things are miniscule. I must do some homework to come up with the numbers but just having done 6 hours of double grandpsrog babysitting by myself I'm too cream crackered to give a wotsit. :-)
If you reach into an engine and turn a set of blades you can hear them 'tinkling' away in their seats as they rotate, it's a pleasant sound, it means they are all there. If any go missing you are certain to know about it, think about the Qantas A380 that had an engine explode when it first came into service. There has to be room for expansion due to heat, rotation etc.
I'll do this properly when I've created a light box and get my old macro lens back
