Barnacles

These little creatures cause problems for us in inverse proportion to their size. They attach themselves to our survey equipment (which is many kilometers in length) in their thousands and have to be regularly scraped off to avoid damage.

In some countries they are eaten as a delicacy but anyone who has ever smelled a rotting barnacle would not even consider such a thing.... truly horrific!
