Mine
After a week of sixteen hours a day of chasing students around and going to great lengths to make sure that things run smoothly for them, today was my time. My afternoon revolved around the things that I have been neglecting or just wishing I could do, and included a few of my favorite verbs including (but not limited to) cycling, trail running, photographing, and powerfeeding. After an afternoon of doing more or less whatever I wanted to, I feel much cheerier about the world. As of now, twenty-two hours until the students return and the focus shifts away from me again. Eight hours ago that was a problem. At the moment I am less concerned.
These leaves, by the way, are located along the local watershed conservation trail that has become my newest fitness addiction. If you've never tried trail running (and you're the sort of sick masochist that likes that kind of thing- we know who we are), it is highly recommended. All of the cushioning of the track and twice the interest of the pavement.
Random musing: What is it about exercise that so entices some of us? Is it really about brain chemistry and the addictive power of endorphins (apparently endurance exercise and heroin use share some chemical processes)? Is it that we've found a form of release that, unlike substance use, is one hundred percent socially acceptable and leaves no nagging guilt? Or is it guilt itself, and our fear of becoming as unfit as those around us? So many explanations.
