Different Adhesion

One one side the leaves have adhered,
On the other they have disappeared.
The cause is mysterious,
The effect not too serious;
In a few weeks they all will have cleared.

I'm sure this phenomenon has an interesting explanation involving chemistry, biology and physics, and I'd love to hear what it is!
