A fruity conundrum

This tree/shrub stands in a neighbouring garden and we can see it clearly at close quarters. It looked particularly attractive today in the sunshine laden as it is with it's bright, shiny fruits. But what is it? I thought immediately it was a quince though I am unfamiliar with that fruit. Mike said they are tiny apples, I am not convinced, any ideas anyone?
The winds howled during the early hours of this morning and it was very windy when we got up. The trees were getting quite a battering. The temperature has dropped too so the fire is on and I plan a cosy night in - who will leave 'Strictly' tonight I wonder!
