Stairway to Heaven
If you drive through Jackology's tunnels and continue uphill for about a mile, you come to a little known gem of a castle known as Someries.
It is situated amongst ramshackle farm buildings, surrounded by huge piles of rubble and rusting machinery, adjacent to the airport runway, but is well worth the visit.
Reputedly the oldest brick building in the county, the ruins are of the gatehouse and chapel, built in the 15th century. The large, associated manor house was demolished in the 18th century.
This photo was taken inside the crumbling, spiral staircase and shows the spiralling handhold which is constructed from moulded bricks. There are only half a dozen or so steps remaining at the bottom of the stairwell, but you can clearly see the holes in the brickwork that would have held the joists for the floor of the upper chambers.
It is wonderfully atmospheric ruin that can be explored in just a couple of minutes.
It makes me wonder if this Stairway to Heaven has an abundance of stories to tell...
