When the water pump was acting up, we'd get buckets from our underground rain-ravine.

We had a few frog/tadpole pets for a bit, but DJG put an end to that with some chlorine- sorry guys.

It was tricky saying no to neighbors, asking for water-- but we quickly saw that it was unsustainable. At one point neighbors simply lined up without asking, one stranger with two massive buckets in-hand for cleaning his car!
