wander, stumble, wonder

Oldies

Once upon a time there was a girl called Imogen. She had a very busy week, and wasn't always very good at transferring dates from email to calendar, or computer to phone. One week she double booked herself on a Friday night. "Yes, that night's fine, dinner would be great! See you all there!" she said, oblivious to the facebook event that had not yet transferred to ical. So one overcast Friday morning she rushed out of the house, bags flying. In one was a salad bowl and bits for the dinner, in another a shiny satin dress and bits for an 'old' themed party. Over her other shoulder was slung her handbag, and camera. "27°C, cloudy, a chance of rain" the men had promised, and so she trotted to the car in sandals, a skirt and a light t-shirt and jacket. This girl was known for always wearing too many layers, for always being prepared, but this was one day on which this would not be true.

All day she sat in her office, watching the rain come and go across the city, feeling slightly cooler than expected. It was at a brisk pace that she walked to the other offices a block away for a meeting, and with worry she felt the rain drops on the way back again. At lunch time she took indoor paths to find some food, but at the end of the day, when it was time to head back to her car, a good 15-20 minute walk away, the rain was still falling.

By the time she reached her car, she was a little soggy, just enough to be uncomfortable. And so a race began. To rush home, get changed, throw together a salad, and make it over to dinner as quickly as possible. All was done, the dinner was arrived at in safety, and delicious food was consumed. They laughed, chatted, and had presents. All pretty nice and civilised.

She then bustled off to the library to old up. Into her bargain 'retro' dress she hopped, up with the hair, into the pointy shoes, and off she toddled. The party was going strong, there was a cave woman, a sun and moon, Dr Who, and various undefined eras. And there were these two. Heth said to her 'It's quite fun being old!'.

I'll be quoting that back at her in 60 years.
