Newcastle Downunder

Harbour Lights

We had a work do tonight at the function centre at Fort Scratchley. The fort was built in 1882 to defend the city against a possible Russian attack. However, its guns were not fired in anger until 8 June 1942, during the shelling of Newcastle. (I saw the re-enactment on the weekend). After the Australian Army left the site in 1972 it became a museum. The fort is actually behind me in this shot. It does however have a great view over the city and harbour. The function centre is only a recent addition and it is outside the fort.

Anyhoo, this is looking north west over the harbour. All those yellow lights in the background are the coal loaders over on Kooragang Island. The string of lights to the right is Stockton Bridge. The foreground (behind the road) is little Beirut (council houses/housing commission) and behind that the foreshore parks. It has been raining today and it was a very misty sort of foggy night. Funny light effects, or maybe my filter is just dirty.
