After The Fire
In April 2010, a farmer in the neighbouring townland set fire to the mountain (a practise continued by some for a flush of green grass for sheep, with little or no consideration for the consequences). This fire raged across the mountain ridge during the night and entered the the farm early in the morning. all we could do was stand and watch while it ravaged through the woodlands and fernane grass, heathers and gorse.
At the time I was pretty devastated but it has been interesting to watch at close hand natures recovery, the fire really favoured the heather and gorse seedling, as you can see in my blip, sprouting amongst the burnt and now bleached gorse sticks. Many trees have put out new shoots from the base and without the scrub it was easier to cut the larger gorse for firewood and make way for new tree planting.
You can view the fire if interested in my blipfolio/home/fire.
