Svartån is a river that has its sources in northern Västmanland close Norberg, runs to the south-east and flows in Västerås bay of Lake Mälaren in Västerås, specifically in the Vasa Park. The river was near the mouth of a sometimes considerable depth. Svartån is 91 km long [1] and has a catchment area of 776 km ². The largest lakes in its drainage basin is Hörendesjön (62 m asl) and Spotted Sea (58 m asl). Svartån belongs to the North's main catchment area.
The central Västerås has several houses vertical walls down to the river (see picture), one of the most depicted motifs in Västerås.
Parts of the river are on the Ramsar list.
