Ramblings and Mutterings

We will remember them

I may have been born long after the end of World War Two, but for me the act of remembrance on this day and on Sunday is very, very important. Without the sacrifices made by the soldiers then and in the first world war, it would have been highly unlikely that I would be living in the world that I live now.

It's vitally important that we continue to remember, and I'm glad to hear that the sale of poppies this year was a record. Even better was to see children remembering and understanding the reasons for this act. We mustn't let the real reasons be clouded by those parties who want to distort and use it for their own reasons.

We will never truly appreciate what these men and women went through in these wars. I went to the theatre the other week to see Journey's End, it was a very moving and powerful play from World War One, and gave you a sense of what it might be like. You can read about it here

The Ode of Remembrance by Laurence Binyon

They went with songs to the battle, they were young.
Straight of limb, true of eyes, steady and aglow.
They were staunch to the end against odds uncounted.
They fell with their faces to the foe.

They shall not grow old, as we that are left grow old.
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun, and in the morning.
We will remember them.
