Hidden History

This is one of the few remaining locks of the original Erie Canal in Cohoes, New York. There were originally 18 locks to surmount Cohoes Falls. They were move many years ago a few miles East. Some of the locks are all but buried with barely the top blocks visible. Others, like this one, are clearly visible but have growth all around them.

It is amazing to me to find out how many people don't know about them or even what they are. This is called Urban Amnesia. Structures that no one can remember what they were or how long they have been there. The local Chamber of Commerce will know but the people living in the area tend to forget.

I'm sure that every city suffers from it. I wonder what in my home town would fall into this category.
