sanibel shells

I am catching up very slowly . . . here is a portrait of Steven, wearing a cap, staring out over the sea. We took a couple of days away and went to Sanibel island last week. Besides him, I caught the sun reflecting on some water in a shell right in front of me. A larger view is here. Sanibel is the shelling capital of the Western Hemisphere!

One of the reasons for these accumulations of shells is the fact that Sanibel is a barrier island which has an "east-west orientation when most islands are north-south. Hence, the island is gifted with great sandy beaches and an abundance of shells."[16] It is also due to the fact that Sanibel is "part of a large plateau that extends out into the Gulf of Mexico for miles. It is this plateau that acts like a shelf for seashells to gather."
