The Herald of Winter

It's been a while since I've seen these fungi - hygrophorus hypothejus is their Sunday name - I suppose I've not been in the right place at the right time. They are one of the relatively few fungi that has a long-standing common name, which they get from the fact that they fruit late in the season, often after the first frost, although to the best of my knowledge, we have not had a frost here yet. I also saw a couple of Fly agaric, which seem to be having a late flush.
Today wasn't a patch on yesterday, but I ventured out for a brief exploration of an area I hadn't been to before, and it did attempt a brief brightening up mid afternoon. The birding highlight was a flock of long-tailed tits.
