Everything is going to be alright
At least that's what it says on the Gallery of Modern Art in Edinburgh. Went for a short walk this afternoon, down to Roseburn, along the Water of Leith and then up the steps to the gallery, before heading back down to the Water of Leith to complete the circuit. Had thought I might blip the Gormley sculpture a year on, but there was no sign of it. I don' think it has actually gone as I seem to remember there is some sort of mechanism that allows them to tip over flat during flooding to prevent them from being damaged. There was an interesting tree that had split, leaving half still standing and the other half stretched alongside the path, and several sculptural contenders in the grounds of the two galleries, but in the end I went for this, on the old building. I like the contrast of the classical architecture and the neon signage. This is by the artist Martin Creed and is originally entitled Work No. 975 EVERYTHING IS GOING TO BE ALRIGHT. It reminds me of the Lux Europea exhibition of street art lighting that happened in Edinburgh in the early 1990s. While most of the works were temporary, put up to coincide with the holding of the organisation's annual conference in Edinburgh that year, the message above the Bank Hotel on the Royal Mile survives.
