Beetle or bug?

His lovely colour against the yellow leaves caught my eye, but I have no idea what he is...
Afraid my attention to commenting is rather patchy at the moment, life is rather hectic with the grandchildren, and we are also completely renovating a rather ancient kitchen. The family only moved into this house in Collaroy this year, and it needs quite a bit of renovation. We ripped up the lino and found a date on it, 1970... Definitely in need of a change!
