Is this country still in shackles?
Johannesburg, South Africa, 27th October 2011
The ANCYL (African National Congress Youth League) held a protest march today to fight for economic freedom. Led by the controversial Julius Malema they walked 27 km to the Johannesburg Stock Exchange to deliver a message. Malema took a taxi as A he can afford it and B that's the type of leader he is - not one that leads by example!!
The point here is that many of these black people are jobless or have very low paid jobs and that they have poor housing and lifestyles. Malema lives in a pluch mansion and is off to have a champagne party tonight as his followers take old buses home ...
The ANCYL have these theories that the whites and the leaders of the country are hogging all the wealth and that it needs sharing out. He isn't racist though, so he says but being a white man amongst this crowd i couldn't help but feel slightly nervous!!!
Melama believes that all people should have economic freedom and that the rich and the corporations have an obligation to support those who are poor.
Malema was recently photographed wearing an expensive suit, watch and getting out of a car you and i would dream of.
Malema has no credible policies to get these people into better jobs or to get them to help themselves.
Malema is under investigation and on a disciplinary hearing within the ANC.
Yet this man and many in the Youth League believe he can lead them to a better life ... one where everything will be ok. The rest of the nation believe that as soon as Malema hits power he'll just dump on these people and do what he wants in a way that will benefit him.
This guy has his views, the rest have theirs. Is there a wrong or a right? Nobody really knows ... the only thing that is certain is that South Africa hasn't seen the last of their troubled days!!!
