While on my runs

Morning Lights

Back to an early morning run, and from Karangahape Road I could see east towards the impending sunrise. In the foreground, part of the major inner city motorway system known as Spaghetti Junction passed below where I was standing. Evidence of the complexly interconnecting roads is given by the light standards, each with four powerful lights.

The motorway lights, the sky and the silhouettes would be encouragement enough to choose this image over the few others I got during this morning's run. However, in response to this week's challenge, memories, I feel satisfied with this shot.

In the far distance stands a tall chimney behind a tall (in reality) but seemingly squat building. Built in the late 1960s this is what was the new block when I started my training. We were on the 10th of the 10 (plus multiple lower) floors. This is now the old part of the new Auckland City Hospital. Psychiatry is no longer banished to the top of a high rise building. No; it is now banished to the rear of the hospital site, and detached from the rest of the clinical services. No matter how much things change, they stay the same.

I have fond memories of training here, and then working here subsequently on three separate occasions. Each later attachment was, however, less pleasurable and more stressful, and the relief on leaving more intense.

Please note the pterodactyl beside the chimney if wanting to work out my age.
