Sgwarnog: In the Field

Glovershaw

It's half-term, and I took the day off to spend with 7yo roaming around Shipley Glen, and taking in the "Wild Wednesday" activities at Brackenhall Countryside Centre.

We started our adventures at the top end of the glen, at Glovershaw, and it's from here that today's image comes. A lucky combination of light and leaf colour made for an irresistable picture of this oak at the far south-western boundary of Baildon Moor.

We had a go at geocaching without GPS, and got two from five which shows that it is possible. For the other three we were probably in the right spot, but the lack of definitive "you are within 10 metres" from GPS menat that if we didn't turn up the cache within a couple of minutes, we didn't quite have the certainty of location to persist. Still, we picked up a trackable from one of the two we did find, which adds to the fun.

The colours along Shipley Glen were superb, and this more characteristic shot of a birch over the Glen was second choice for blip of the day. We weren't really hunting for rock art, but came across a few of the cup-marked rocks that hug the top of the valley.

The activities at Bracken Hall were autumn themed. We built nest boxes for carder bees from tin cans and straws, and twig habitat bundles to help lacewings and ladybirds through the winter, as well as the usual mask making and painting. They run free events like this on most Wednesdays during school holidays, which is a great resource to have around the corner.
