Woking Golf Club, Hook Heath
If I played golf, which I don't, I think that Woking Golf Club in Hook Heath, a short distance from our home, is the sort of course I would like to play. I'm told that it's about as traditional as you can get for a golf course. It was established in 1893, just a couple of years before H G Wells came to the town and began working on some of his most famous science fiction novels, The Time Machine, The Invisible Man and The War of the Worlds.
Unlike the town itself, Wells seems to have spared the golf club in his book. That was kind of him as there's a pleasant walk through the woods. We put Pippa, our Jack Russell pup on the lead in case she decided to run off and grab a golf ball.
Autumn is really setting in now. The first frosts have tinged the leaves yellow. Today there was sunshine and showers and the light was changing every minute. No wonder Monet painted Rouen Cathedral so many times. He'd have to be quick if he wanted to paint this place.
