It's the time of year when it starts getting really chilly in Beijing, so naturally it's also the time of year when the local authority decides to cut off hot water to the compound for a couple of days for who-knows-why. And without giving anyone any warning. Which means no showers either at home or in the gym, and an unheated- and therefore deserted- swimming pool.
