Ice day
Today was ice day. It was by far the best day of the trip and the best day of 2011 so far.
We started out from hotel laki and went to (allegedly) the largest sea cliffs in europe which were spectacular. The next thing we saw was a bridge destroyed by glacial floods some 20 years ago where the metal had been bent into impossible shapes by house sized blocks of ice.
We carried on to Skaftafell national park where we saw waterfalls and glaciers. After this we traveled to Jökulsárlón for a duck boat trip around the glacial lagoon. Before returning to accommodation near Mýrdalsjökull.
The scale of things in iceland is warped. The cliffs are 4km away, 600-700m high. A lot of southern iceland is on 'raised beaches' which is basically where the land has risen up after the last ice age, so despite being 0.5-1m above sea level we are 17km from the sea. Its like the oceans have drained away.
