Community Orchard
This afternoon I took my daughter to the open day on the nearby community orchard. We regularly go down there - it's a brilliant place. At work we have a link with the Orchard and take kids down there. It's part of the allotment site (supposedly the oldest in the world!) and comprises of several allotments joined together. As the name suggests there are loads of fruit trees, but also several brick huts, ponds, firepits and a stream with a couple of bridges over it.
It's run by two workers, who are excellent and do a range of activities from cooking over the fire to working with tools.
Todays open day was funded by money for areas hit by the recent riots, and the orchard is a great community focal point in this part of the inner-city.
This is the only picture I took - there were loads of kids about and I didn't feel I could really wander round taking pictures! The bars of the gate across the sign don't really do it justice - it's a wonderfully welcoming place!
