The remains of the castle founded by Walter L'espec, a major figure in the reign of Henry 1. He founded nearby Riveaux Abbey

His father had followed William 1 as part of the Norman Conquest.

The main part of the castle was built by Robert de Roos.

The castle was a battle site during the English Civil War

It now has a visitor centre
