Sandy Heath Transmitter

This is Sandy Heath transmitter and it sits about a mile from our house. It is a television broadcast station and it first aired on 13th July 1965, originally broadcasting Anglia Television and BBC2, BBC1 being added by January 1971. It carried Channel 4 and Channel 5 from their launch days.

It is 241 metres (790ft) and today it broadcasts digital television on the DTT platform as Digital Switchover took place on 13th April 2011. Sandy Heath is the main local TV transmitter for Cambridgeshire, Northamptonshire and north Hertfordshire. It also broadcasts the BBC local radio station BBC Three Counties Radio and the independent radio station Heart Bedford formerly Chiltern.

It is also a fantastic landmark for spotting when returning home from swomewhere as we know that we are nearly home when we can see the Sandy Heath Transmitter.
