Tonight was the farewell performance by Triage, a heavy metal band of a friend of a friend...

Of course, music genres with names like death metal, metalcore, melodic death metal, death punk, nu metal, avante-garde metal, etc. have never really been my bag, but tonight's show (believe it or not, my second) justifies an open mind. It was loud, energetic, full of piercings and growls, and extremely fun. The biggest surprise, though, was the musicians themselves, who paused in between every throat-shredding song to talk about social issues, respect, and peace. That, and the crowd who applauded them was far more sober than any frat party I've ever attended. Down with alligator-breasted polos, up with Mudvayne tees!

So, I wasn't as out of place among the black-clad pit-dwellers as I thought. Despite beating the hell out of each other for five minutes at a time, these dudes and dolls are pretty tame. Peace. Respect.
