It Takes a Village

Last night when I was taking my children (on the bus) home, one of the families didn't have an adult home to receive the children. (this is the first time ever in 8 years for this family, they have a son in grade 12 as well but he doesn't take the bus anymore) The protocol is to let them off the bus if they are in grade 1 or higher. These two are in grade 1 and 3 but I know they've never been left home alone and they are waaaay too young to be left. Luckily their neighbours were home and are trustworthy people so I was able to leave the kids there. The little girl told me her mom was at their new house working. They are moving in about a week and won't be on my bus anymore:(
Their new house is right around the corner from me so when I was done on the bus I raced over there to tell mom what was going on.
When I got there I found her beside herself with worry as she just then realized the time and didn't know where her children were....she was crying and just freaking out. She was also very relieved to hear they were at the neighbours.
Tonight she gave me this peace lilly as a thank you:)

I don't understand why it's the bus company's ruling that we are to let such small children off without supervision. They say things like, "Let them off the bus, if they were good parents they'd be there"...."it's not our problem"....I just don't understand this.....are they waiting until a tragedy happens to change the rules?
Well it won't be one of my kids that's for sure!!
I don't give a flying $^&k about their policy!!

I really will miss the kids on my bus but I am starting to just HATE being a bus driver. It's a strong word, I know, but it's true:(
