Flame Photometer

I saw this old Flame Photometer sitting atop an abandoned 'Pigeonhole' messagebox on the way to a seminar at the University of Edinburgh today.

The sticker attached to it reads "Keep for Union / Charity"; I wonder what benefit either might eventually derive from this machine.
