Honey I Shrunk My Bike

Hubshot 2 - I've got an idea for one more offbeat version, after yesterday's success, and some other locations to try out as well. Fading light when taking these is providing some challenges... And tomorrow AM is out the window as I'm going to a seminar at 8 in the morning. Bleurgh. At least they're providing breakfast.

Work is... happening... But focus on other things is, thankfully, returning. Centred around bikes. And today I got an email asking me if I'd be interested in handling media/PR for a cycling event which will be coming to Edinburgh next year. It's a pretty big event, but by it's nature I doubt there will be any cash in it. What there might be, however, is the chance for a little promotion of citycycling alongside, as well as meeting some really interesting bike folk, so I'm minded to at least accept the invitation of a coffee to go and find out more.

Oh, and putting together the cycling and work streams, I'd contacted our Travel and Transport department about setting up a BUG (Bicycle User Group) for the whole organisation. Offered to take the lead and run it, start promoting cycling, and (very cleverly I thought) tied it into a bit of Corporate Social Responsibility by highlighting the sustainability of the suggestion. Might as well try and tick some corporate brownie point boxes along the way.

I received a reply today saying it was the 'Smart Thinking' (or some such other daft name) department that looks after cycling, and here's an article on the intranet about cycling. It was from June. Advertising National Bike to Work Week. There was one other cycling story. From the same time last year. On National Bike to Work Week.

Seriously, both the Travel and Smart Thinking pages have stuff on sustainable transport, about making better choices, about the regular 'No Travel' weeks (meaning have meetings by teleconference and the like); and plaster the pages with public transport and car-sharing options. This is a HUGE organisation, and I'm frankly stunned there's nothing about cycling at all.

Different approach I think. I'm going to apply for an intranet group of pages to have the Cycling Department as a separate body. Could be interesting times ahead!
