WOT! I was asleep.
Last night the hound located the two surviving babies from our resident hedgehog. They have been doing their own thing for about 2 months now, mum has not been around for ages and the offspring have been doing well since being born under our shed.
I believe this is a female due to a lack of undercarriage and what looks remarkably like 'lady bits' near the stern. She is now ensconced in next doors garden in their hedgehog house, safe, fed on meal worms and dog food, she appears content already. She weighs 365 grams, about 150-200 grams short of the necessary hibernation weight, but should soon put on some weight due to additional feeding.
Her brother is now in our grandson's garden, he scuttled off sharpish as he was placed in a pre-prepared home, and was last seen lurking in thick undergrowth. He should be OK as he will be fed exactly as his sister.
We also have two very large males who frequent the garden, this summer they once again fought long and hard for the attentions of Mrs Tiggywinkle. The victor obviously enjoyed the spoils of combat, his progeny live on. The hope is to extend the population by moving them into larger gardens, with room to roam and breed. large
