Windows

The question here is - can you spot the difference between the windows that are real glass... and those that are not?

It is all about the Window Tax in England - 1695. The idea, cooked up by Parliament - was to tax the rich, those who could most afford to pay, on the simple ground that the more windows you had, the bigger your house, the greater your wealth, etc. At the time, many people in Britain opposed income tax, on principle, because they believed that the disclosure of personal income represented an unacceptable governmental intrusion into private matters, and a potential threat to personal liberty.

Sounds painfully familiar, doesn't it (UK Council Tax - Thatcher's invention)?

If you are unbelievably wealthy, you can afford to pay, and - while you're at it - draw attention to your wealth. If you can not or will not play, then you are in the same situation as the impecuneous rebel...
