Temple E, Selinus, Sicily

Sicily just wouldn't be Sicily without a good Greek temple. This one of the temples built to the east of the town of Selinus in the early 5th century BC. It was possibly dedicated to Hera but is now rather romantically known as temple "E".

Selinus was founded in 628 BC by Greek settlers and soon became wealthy from Agriculture. By the end of the century it had been enclosed in strong fortifications and boasted at least 7 large temples.

The city was sacked by the Carthaginians in 409 BC and again in 250 BC during the first Punic war. It was then abandoned and never rebuilt.
