Rowhedge from Wivenhoe
Names of places in the countryside always sound so much nicer, earthier, and friendlier. Wivenhoe itself has a long river frontage, with a number of public houses where folks can sit outside on a summer's day and admire the boats making their way up and down the river Colne.
Rowhedge is not quite a mirror image of Wivenhoe; it has it's fair share of riverside drinking places, but there are (or were) more working quays here. Both are quite picturesque from their opposing river banks, and I've seen many a water colour for sale of both views.
Some of the other interesting village names nearby include Fingringhoe, Langenhoe and East Doneyland. Much of the land around about is interrupted by mud flats and creeks with names like Pyefleet channel and Geeden Creek.
Here's an earlier blip of Wivenhoe's frontage.
While I'm on the subject of earthy names, does anyone remember the Monty Python sketch where they declared every word as either woody or tinny?
