Belt Man
More memorabilia - this time a walking stick owned by my father. I think it must have been presented to him by Manly Surf Life Saving Club - I can just make out what I think is "MSLC" on the central buckle.
As a life-guard in the 1930's, my father was the "Belt Man" - the guy that had to wear the belt and swim out to the person in trouble whilst the rest of the team had to look after the line and help as the casualty was brought to shore.
It's amazing what you can turn upon Google - there's an old picture of my father on Page 10 in a modern brochure about the Manly Surf Life Saving Club produced for the junior section - The Nippers.
