Just What Is It You Wanna Do?.............
Yesterday/Today was as exciting, as it was fraught w/anxiety.
Would Primal Scream be on form tonight, would they do justice to my own personal expectation of what Screamadelica should sound like live?? Would the gig be a suitable celebration of the 20th anniversary of one of my all-time favourite albums?
Sandra & I headed off early to the gig to avoid any chance of being late and factoring in the possibility of hitting bad traffic. As fortunate as we were to initially hear about the gig while listening to the radio in the car, we were also fortunate in listening to the radio in the car again tonight.
After playing some live Primal Scream we were reminded that the gig was being played in a venue that had relocated to the other side of the city from where it had been. And where we were headed!
So halfway to the wrong place we turned around and headed for the right place only to hit stagnant traffic heading the other way!! After about 70 minutes we passed by where we had originally started!
When we got to the venue, we were relieved to see a queue outside the venue, which gave us hope that nothing had started yet. An hour later we were certain we had missed nothing, but were still stuck outside in a queue!! Eventually, we got in to a quite interesting early-90s indie disco, that was still going an hour later. Still no sign of the band.
The only thing keeping my patience & good-humour from disappearing was the fact that even though we were right up to the front of the stage, we just needed to shout and somebody was able to bring us beer (and take away our empty bottles (no minging plastic-cups here either!)) all the time!!
When Primal Scream started just after midnight, all the worries just lifted and it was like being transported back to an age when I was senseless fool! Absolutely great they were. I loved it.
It was a more pared back & intimate performance than I've seen before, but I don't think the gig suffered because of that at all. "Don't Fight It, Feel It", being my personal favourite from the night.
Bobby had the appearance of a man on a mission to be "Higher Than The Sun", but it certainly didn't get in the way of the performance. Moment of the night for me was when Sandra misheard me say that Bobby's surname was Gillespie, and responded, "Bobby The Lesbian?!?!, that can't be right?"
As close to loss of sphincter control as I could've got that night.
I ended up not bringing my camera and using Sandra's iPhone, which all things considered was surprisingly good!
