We spent the morning cleaning up a small area of the backyard, just under the plum tree that had been pruned. Lots of dead leaves and branches, so why not also cut back the spent dahlias, trim up the irises, and groom that leggy spirea while we're at it? Oh, and take out part of that invasive salvia under the pink rose...and the fence needs a kickboard to keep the dirt from running into the neighbor's yard...might as well pull out the squash plants that have stopped bearing, and look--the berries have grown into the path, the cosmos are taking over the baby apple trees, oh my. We filled the greenwaste can and three additional barrels in the space of a few hours.

Oh, the grasshopper was just sitting out on the back steps--he's only about a half-inch long...
