Colours of the Fall

Liquidamber styraciflua - sweet gum

This is the time when our Liquidamber comes into its own. It colours early and drops its leaves late. In its foliage, it seems to have just about every colour from the Autumn palette. We inherited this tree when we bought the house, and it was hidden behind a huge, dull conifer. The conifer was taken out to reveal the little tree behind.

Liquidamber is native to North America, but is commonly grown for its colour in gardens in Britain.

Well, we had 5 glorious days of sunrises and sunsets, and today was more typical of the time of year. It was grey and drizzly, and the drizzle intensified into rain when I finally went for a walk in the afternoon. I had a stroll round Leighton Moss in the hope of seeing one of the two otter families that are thought to be on the Reserve. No luck today, but I'll keep trying. An otter blip would be a dream come true for me.

Otherwise a quiet day for recharging batteries ahead of a busy week.
