A bit of brightness on an otherwise dreich day. Best to avoid the news with the wall-to-wall coverage of the heatwave down south.

The other bit of brightness was listening to my mum as she watched a bit of the X-factor for the first time ever this afternoon. Nothing like a bit of sensible and straight-talking to realise why reaching for the off button is the only thing to do:

'Get your hair cut'
'What is that warbling racket?'
'Why are they all crying?'
'They breathe in all the wrong places'
'Can't they hold a note without screeching?'

It was a tirade and it was very amusing.
