Fungal Fruits

Mrs Joesblips had a birthday recently and for her present her children put their purses together and bought her something she has wanted for several years..... a ticket to a Mushroom hunt. Better still, two tickets to a mushroom hunt, so that I could accompany her. It was a long and very wet day but we had fun and learned a lot. There were a couple of identification workshops, a mushroom cook up, lunch and of course the hunt itself.

Here you see just part of the haul of fungus brought back for identification by the experts. We discovered that there are over 2500 known species in Ireland. Of that only about 25 are dangerously toxic but alas only about 30 are worth eating. The rest are edible but not worth the effort being either largely tasteless or else would make one mildly ill. With these things it pays to be safe, so the day was well worth while.
